Health & Safety Accident Reporting
All student, staff or visitor accidents and injuries must be reported to your nearest campus security office. In order to be prepared for any eventuality, be sure to acquaint yourself with their location ahead of time.
It is always best to be aware of procedures before accidents happen. All George Brown College employees are covered under the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act. Visit the GBC Health, Safety, & Wellness page for more information regarding accident reporting and health & safety at George Brown. The relevant article in the Collective Agreement for health and safety is Article 24. It requires that the college makes reasonable provisions for the conditions of safety and health in our work areas by conforming with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.

Safety Equipment
Where our job duties require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required under the OHSA of Ontario, the college must provide such equipment at no cost to us. For example, if you require goggles/safety glasses or special clothing or footwear for your work, the college must provide these items. Specific eligibility problems are resolved by the JHSC at George Brown College [Must login to GBCommunity to view].
Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC)
The Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) is comprised of worker representatives and employer representatives. Each campus at George Brown College has a JHSC representative at each work site. The Local 556 JHSC representatives are posted on these bulletin boards:
- St James, A Building – In the basement, between the cafeteria and the Xerox Print Centres.
- Casa Loma, C Building – In the 2nd floor hallway which runs between the cafeteria and the loading dock.
- SHE Building, TMU Campus – In the photocopy room.
